10 UK PUBLISHERS WHO ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS FROM WRITERS

The post about Macmillan New Writing generated a fair bit of interest so I've put together a list of ten UK based publishers who WILL accept submissions directly from writers.

The links posted here will take you straight through to the appropriate page on the publisher's website detailing their submissions policy and instructions. PLEASE read these carefully and do as asked.

While on any site I strongly recommend you browse around a bit and familiarise yourself with the publisher's list, seek out their blog and gather clues on their current acquisitions policy.

If a publisher has a newsletter, and they seem as though they could be a possible home for your work at some point in the future, then sign up.

PLEASE, don't just smash, grab and send; give careful thought to your query and show consideration.

You know the ropes - but if you don't, don't send, otherwise a few more doors may close.

  • I've indicated which publishers are e-mail query friendly with a big YES.
  • And I've indicated hard-copy submissions only with a big NO.
  • And I've indicated publishers who have a blog link in the sidebar here with an asterisk.

I intend to post a list of ten U.S. publishers who accept submissions from writers next week.

  3. I've just had my debut novel published by Legend Press and would recommend them very highly. They're only small and don't have the huge marketing budgets of the major publishers, but they're willing to take a chance on new writers, and what they lack in funds they make for in creativity!

  4. Hi Andrew, thanks for your comment. I went looking for Legend writers the other day, but I couldn't find any blogs that looked current, to seek their views on Legend because someone over at Authonomy (where I posted a link to this list)had asserted that Legend was a VANITY press outfit, and I wanted to give someone who knew from experience an opportunity to deny or confirm. Best of luck with your book.

  6. Hi Haarlson,

Just saw your comment. Legend Press is a small publisher but definitely runs on the "traditional" publishing model, i.e. they pay me, not the other way round!

They do also operate some sort of partnership with YouWriteOn.com to offer a self-publishing package, and perhaps that's what the commenter was referring to. But the main publishing house is separate from that, and pays standard royalty rates with no charges to authors. They have good sales and marketing support too - my book's on the shelves in all the big bookshops, and just got a review in the Daily Mail. Hope this helps to clarify!

    Best,
    Andrew

  8. I am currently writing a manuscript which I think has potential as a teenage thriller. It is currently in its later stages of development and I am interested in trying to get it published.Any recommendations on which of these publishers would be best suited to this genre?
Also, any tips for impressing a publisher?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi Anonymous, thanks for callig in. Sorry not to have responded sooner - just caught your comment when tracking back through posts.
Teenage thriller - sounds intriguing. You say it's in its later stage of development. Firstly I'd recommend you finish the MS. I know when scouting for work some editors prefer to see the first 50 or so pages AND the final 10 pages before agreeing to read the whole MS. If you think about it you'll appreciate why.
Tips for impressing a publisher? Write well, write like you mean it, and find a strong voice.
Hope that gives you something to go on. Regards.

  10. Greetings, Haarlson Phillips.
Congratulations and gratitude. I finished my first novel three days ago and went to the Web for advice on how to proceed. Luckily, your site came up on Google immediately, and I've been with it almost constantly since. I've hit your pages at least five dozen times as I went back and forth between other tasks.
I'll stay with you for good. I can't overstate my admiration.

  11. Hi Jim, firstly, congratulations on finishing your first novel. I mean that - so many start out, so few finish. However, the hard work begins now - as I'm sure you'll understand. Having said that, allow yourself a big, greedy smile - you've achieved something. Appreciate your comment - I nearly blushed. Glad you find the blog useful. Sincere apologies for not picking up on your comment earlier. All the best, regards

  12. None of these accept YA or children's books which is a shame. Why is it that independent publishers aren't interested in such a vibrant area?

  13. Hi,
I live in India and have written a 50000 word novel that belongs to nonsense literature genre. Unfortunately, Indian publishers are not interested in this genre. Could you please help me with the names of publishers in UK who might be interested in it? Also, those who take unsolicited manuscripts. Thanks.

  14. Hi, Please note Two Ravens Publishing is no longer accepting unsolicited fiction MS..

  23. Hello there, you really made my year with this post and your whole website. I was wondering if you had any opinion of Snowbooks? Are they a good publisher to work with? They stood out for me a lot so I hope that if they like me as much as I like them, things should be as sweet as pie. :D

  24. Hi, thanks for calling in. Glad you find the blog useful. As to Snowbooks, well, I haven't any experience of working with them as a writer though on the occasions when I have contacted them for information,Emma Barnes has always been professional, helpful and courteous. I used to be an avid reader of their blog. And Rob, the other boss at Snowbooks, has always been polite and businesslike. To get an upclose view on Snowbooks you may want to make contact with Wayne Simmons, who has, as of this week, four books published with Snowbooks. You can catch up with Wayne through Facebook - I'm sure he'd welcome you as a friend. Best of luck. Regards.

  25. I must show my thanks to the writer just for rescuing me from such a crisis. As a result of looking throughout the world-wide-web and seeing thoughts which were not productive, I assumed my entire life was well over. Being alive devoid of the solutions to the difficulties you’ve resolved as a result of your entire site is a serious case, as well as the kind which could have in a negative way affected my entire career if I had not discovered the website. Your personal natural talent and kindness in dealing with almost everything was helpful. I’m not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come upon such a point like this. I am able to at this point relish my future. Thanks so much for your high quality and effective help. I will not hesitate to propose your web site to any individual who needs to have counseling on this problem.ipad or tablet |
